Nepalese police have arrested 10 persons running a kidney transplant racket in villages of Hokse, Panchkhal and Jyamdi in Kavre district for years.

The 10--Prem Bahadur Bajhgain, Manoj Raut, Sachin Maharjan, Rajan Darji, Mina Darji, Krishna Bahadur Darji, Suman Shrestha, Binod Dhakal, Kumar Adhikari and Sanulal Maharjan--were made public at the District Police Office (DPO) in Dhulikhel on Tuesday.

Sachin Maharjan and Manoj Raut are considered the brain behind the racket, police said.

Sub-Inspector of Police Dipendra Chand, who led the team of officers that made the arrest, said two of the racketeers had themselves undergone kidney transplant in the past.

“Villagers gave away one of their kidneys for anything between 35,000 Nepalese rupees (US$349.2) and 160,000 Nepalese rupees (US$1802.08), while the smugglers sold them for not less than 900,000 Nepalese rupees in India by forging donors’ documents,” said Chand.

DPO Chief Kamal Gharti said criminal charges have been filed against all the arrestees.

The ‘kidney dealers’ were mostly active in Hokse, where almost every household has at least one member who had had their kidney sold.

The people selling their kidneys are 18-49 years of age and are both male and female. Three villagers in Hokse have already died due to complications that resulted from kidney extraction.
