Taiwan Vice President Wu Den-yih yesterday denied claims that he had met alleged former Bamboo Union capo Chen Wei-min in secret, adding, instead, that he was introduced to Chen in public.
Bamboo Union, also known as the United Bamboo Gang, is reportedly one of the largest and most powerful mafia syndicates in Taiwan.
According to a Next Magazine report, Wu was seen with Chen at a banquet of important members of the political, business and media sectors in July.
Wu said Chen had approached him at the banquet and asked for a photograph, adding that he shook Chen's hand out of politeness.
Wu said that he was not previously acquainted with Chen, and that he has not remained in contact with Chen since the banquet, rejecting claims that he had discussed anything with the alleged former capo.
The vice president further added that he was unaware of Chen's background, and that Chen did not present a business card of any sort.
“I couldn't have possibly asked him for his Police Criminal Record Certificate as a prerequisite for a photograph,” Wu said.
The vice president explained that he is frequently approached for photographs and handshakes at public events, and that it would be impossible to ask everyone for their criminal records before he shook hands or had his photograph taken with them.
On another note, when asked if he plans to direct the Kuomintang chairman election, Wu said, “That's a fanciful notion. There's isn't the slightest chance.”
