Indonesia is making progress in HDI, but still below average

Indonesia boasted a higher life expectancy and higher incomes last year and climbed to a higher position — although only slightly — on the human development index (HDI) published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

2013 according to the UNDP Human Development Report, is Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) slightly improved to 0.335 in 2011 in 2012, 0.629 collected by a higher life expectancy of 69.8 years together with a solid average years of schooling of 5.8 years, as well as an expected years of schooling from 12.9 years.

Although the country to 121th position from 124th place in 2011, of 187 countries surveyed moved, Indonesia's HDI is still below the world average of 0.849 and the East Asia and Pacific regional average of 0683. Indonesia is classified in the category ' medium human development ' along with 45 other countries.

"Indonesia's HDI has increased by 49 per cent between 1980 and 2012, making it one of the top performers in human development progress upward. The latest report shows that Indonesia further ahead, as it has done for the last three decades, "UNDP Indonesia spokesman Tomi Soetjipto told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Tomi cited improving access to health care and social security nationwide as one of the factors to the increased life expectancy of Indonesians have affected. Indonesia has the same HDI as Kiribati and South Africa.

The report noted Indonesia as one of the developing countries that had done "very well" and "rapid people-oriented development" shown, and its experience and know-how can inspire fellow developing countries to follow.

In addition to Indonesia, the report noted that Brazil, China, India, South Africa and Turkey had made progress fast.

The House of representatives speaker Marzuki Alie welcomed the UNDP report, citing as proof of "the Government consistent effort for development".

"This means that the Government is on the right track. We can further speed up the development of this country as we join together and support what the Government has done, "Marzuki told the Post.

The Democratic Party politician said that the growing development of the country gradually Indonesia's role in the global community, citing the country's participation in a Committee to draft the millennium development goals (MDGs) as an example.

Despite the performance is still well below Indonesia several Asean members that much higher HDI, including Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines have reached.

Asean-Singapore is the country with the highest HDI of 0,895, places of 18th worldwide, followed by Malaysia with Brunei Darussalam 0.855 HDI in 30th place and 64th with 0.769 HDI ranking. Thailand and the Philippines 103th and 114th list with HDI of 0.690 and 0.271 respectively.

Meanwhile are other members, such Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia under Indonesia on 127th and 138th position respectively; with Laos and Cambodia share the 138th position.

Norway topped the world human development index rank with a score of 0.955; followed by Australia and the us in the second and third place with 3528 and 0.843 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria were registered as have the lowest HDI.
