Nepal’s student wings affiliated with various political parties on Wednesday demonstrated against the government in different parts of capital city Kathmandu, resulting in traffic disturbances.
The protesters have halted vehicular movement in front of government campuses in the valley.
The students have been protesting against the appointment of former Chief Secretary, Lokman Singh Karkias Chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), the anti-graft body.
The students have been demanding an immediatewithdrawal of the decision to appoint Karki as CIAA chief arguing that he was involved in suppressing the People’s Movement in 2006.
Meanwhile, police detained civil society representatives—Kanak Mani Dixit, SambhuThapa, human rights activists CharanPrasai and DronRegmi, son of one of the martyrsof 2006 Peoples Movement—who were due to stage sit-in in front of the President's official residence in SheetalNiwas this morning. They have been detained at Maharajgunj-based Nepal Police No 2 battalion.
Likewise, CPN-UML aligned Youth Association called half an hour transportation strike in New-Baneshwor this morning.
Addressing the corner assembly, Youth Association General Secretary Rajiv Pahari said stern protest would be announced against the appointment of Karki.
Pahari warned senior political leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal, SushilKoirala and JhalaNathKhanal either to withdraw Karki's appointment or to leave their respective parties.
