Following a tip-off received from the US consul-general in Kolkata, India’s Western Naval Command here has issued a terror alert for Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore asking local cops and intelligence networks to tighten vigil in their respective jurisdictions.
The probable date--July 21, mentioned in a communication from a little known Al Jihad organisation--to “blow up” railway stations and some sensitive installations has puzzled the police and Intelligence Bureau.
It is believed to be mentioned in a single-sheet letter received at the Consulate from a little known organisation, Al Jihad. The threat is specific. On Al Jihad's letterhead, it says: “ We shall carry out blasts in public places and railway stations of Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai in July this year.”
The Al Jihad letter also threatens to target American consulate in Kolkata and Mumbai, It says its mission is to attack American citizens in public places as well as attached to consul-general's offices.
The threatening letter was passed on to Mumbai police and the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) by Sanjay Kumar, the command intelligence officer at Western Naval Command in Mumbai.
Simultaneously, the information was also forwarded to the Intelligence Bureau and its offices in these three cities. The Central agencies have been, so far, clueless about Al Jihad. The cops say it could be an off-shoot of Indian Mujahideen or its mentor Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The Mumbai ATS has released posters of four Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives across Maharashtra who are wanted by it in connection with the Pune blasts.
The vigil in Mumbai and cities like Nashik and nearby Deolali Army Cantonment has been stepped up following the conviction of IM operative Himayat Mirza Baig by a Pune court in the German Bakery blast case. He is on death row as the ATS produced sufficient evidence to establish his involvement in the blast that killed 17 people.
