A new gallery for old photos

The Swotha Gallery in Nepal aims to contribute to the sharing and the study of Nepali photography

 

The popularity of photography as a hobby and job is definitely on the rise in Nepal these days. Many photography groups exist around the Kathmandu Valley, there are countless workshops and training occurs on a regular basis and photography exhibitions have taken over a big chunk of gallery space. Keeping such a trend in movement, was founded by the Swotha Gallery, the exhibit Nepal picture library for photos and located in Swotha Toll, Patan, inaugurated on 12 March. The event included a video presentation, a slide show, as well as a live performance of popular Nepali instrumental band and Kobahal of local favorites Kutumba Dha Baja Khala.

Nepal picture library, founded in April 2011 is an initiative of photo. circle for archiving pictures from Nepal. It wants to contribute to the study of Nepali photography and intelligence and awareness-raising in the memory, identity and historical exploration of the country with the help of pictures. The inauguration of Swotha Gallery marks the extension of the picture library outside cyberspace.

"In addition to being a Swotha exhibition space, Gallery also plans to a hub for collecting old photos and stories of Patan," said Bhushan Shilpakar, co-founder of the library.

On the inauguration, has the Gallery showcasing the works of prominent Nepali photographer use Bahadur Shrestha.

"I am very happy to show of my work here in my home city of Patan," said Shrestha.  He added that the archiving of the pictures in the picture library Nepal his work has given a new life. Shrestha had spent the 1970s and 1980s travel in Nepal and take pictures of the mountains, the culture and the people. More than 1,100 of his photos and negatives have been digitized by the picture library. They were previously exhibited under the title letter cards and Beyond on the Siddhartha Art Gallery in August last year.

To the process of ' view ' more interactive, that the Gallery Archive Swotha also want to organsie afternoons where photographers will be invited to their old photos for digitized under the Nepal picture library.

"We will also set up a good stand on oral history and interviews with contributors. This material will be a valuable addition to the picture library said Nepal growing collections of photos and interviews, "Shilpakar.

Swotha Gallery is open all seven days of the week from 11 am-6 pm
