Nepal’s civil employees protest controversial nomination in anti-graft body

Nepal’s civil servants have taken to the streets in dress code to protest against the recommendation to appoint controversial figure Lokman Singh Karki as the chief of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), the only anti-corruption body in Nepal.

The civil employees who came out on the streets under the banner of Federation of Nepali Professionals chanting slogans such as "take action against corrupt Lokman Singh, withdraw the recommendation for his appointment."  Teachers, engineers, health workers, employees of District Development Committee, Department of Road and Attorney General's Office, among others, participated in the protest.

Police personnel have been heavily deployed around Babarmahal where the civil employees have been staging the protest. The road leading to Singha Durbar has been obstructed.

The Constitutional Council on Sunday recommended Karki to appoint him as the chief commissioner at the Commission for the Investigation of the Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
