Roll are making a comeback with college crowds in Bangladesh, and Dhaka Roll offers them the perfect pick-me-up
Dhaka might be playing home to an increasing number of 'cool' fast food joints, but the humble roll is making a comeback with college kids vying to wax nostalgic about those school-time lunches where these rolls were practically ubiquitous. And Dhaka Roll is cashing in on the resurgence of interest in these scrumptious wraps with their endless variety of fillings.
Located on Abed Dhali Road, Dhanmondi in the Bangladeshi captial, Dhaka Roll has become a sensation with young crowds since the day it opened in late January just this year. The outlet specialises in rolls, but that does not mean limited offerings. There are 17 different rolls on the men, from egg rolls, to double beef khiri rolls - all at the very reasonable price of 70-180 taka (US$0.8-2.2) each. These are also extremely fresh being that the kebab meat for the filling is fried right in front of you.
You won't be complaining about service either, and for students running around Dhanmondi trying to get to and from classes, the rolls at Dhaka Roll are the perfect pick-me-up.
Dhaka Roll is a product of ICE Retail Initiative, the company that brought the popular Cream and Fudge Factory to the country. Mijanur Rahman Dholon, the Assistant Head of Operations, says, “Dhaka Roll has been quite popular since we opened. What makes us different is that we only prioritise rolls so we can give our hundred percent to that product other than having all kinds of items on the menu.”
When asked about plans for the future, he says, “We plan to set up branches all over the city."
Until that happens, the one outlet in Dhamondi is getting all the business it can handle. Dhaka Roll, after all, possesses all the qualities young Bangladeshis appreciate in a food joint - fast, easy on the pockets, and unquestionably delicious.
